"Spirit of Sand Wash"
bronze by Curtis Zabel

In the high plains of northwest Colorado it is easy to step back to a simpler time. Far from bustling metropolis one easily notices nature and its majesty. Situated on the rolling, grassy plains, off the highway on the edge of town is an inviting pull off. Parking your car and getting out you see kiosks with fantastic photographs of horse in the wild, a history of the legacy and birth of the wild horse herds in the United States.

As your gaze wanders westward you see her, the lead mare, standing alert yet relaxed and free. Your eyes look to the rolling countryside and observe the rest of the band, mothers and babies, the "teenagers" of the bunch, and finally the stallion. Proud, majestic, he watches over the group, always on the lookout for other males and predators wanting to take away one of "his" mares. Before the day is over he may have to fight off a younger male trying to prove he is ready for his own herd.

Your imagination kicks in. You want more. The kiosks include maps and directions to the herds nearby. The plan is to pack a picnic lunch, stock up on film, and head out to find the free roaming horses of the Wild West. The pictures, the experience, the memories will stay with you forever.

This is the Wild Horse Monument Interpretive Center fully realized.
